(Not) In the Pink

At this point in February, our valley is usually filled with the sight and scent of almond blossom

February 2011

Like the rest of the world, we have had very unusual weather in recent months. We have had a cold, but fairly dry winter, which has resulted in a severe lack of blossom

There is only a 'smattering'  to be seen...and lots of very disappointed visitors to the area. Busloads of people come to the area during February, just to walk through the almond groves, but there is very little for them to look at right now.   The hope is that it has just been delayed, but worst case is that the trees will go straight to leaf, which will be such a pity.

We have ended up with lots of trees which look like this.....

....blossom on the side which gets the sun- and practically bare on the other side!

Is it just here, or has the weather wreaked havoc on the growing season where you are?

Thanks for dropping by!
Take care of you
Alison xx

  3. You're not alone, we had some lovely spring flowers opening in pots in our front garden and they are looking very sorry for themselves since the snow and ice.
Those trees are beautiful in their blossom, let's hope they pick up soon.

  5. awww it's a shame to see the trees so confused - not much happening here, i did see some daffs before the snow fell though x

  8. Mother nature is certainly a little confused here too! The grass in our back garden is lush and green and very very long. It could really do with cutting, but it never dries out enough. Glad you're able to comment again now. I've missed seeing you over at my place.

  11. Gosh, that isn't good! When I was at Mijas the other week, Mariann commented that the almond blossom was out early... but then it turned cold at the end of the week and I was wondering if the trees would have been "frosted" and lost their flowers.
I hope your local trees blossom soon - it could be a rather disastrous year for the farmers, if they lose their almond crops. And of course it's not so great to lose the visitors in the Spring either - and quite sad not to see the pretty pink almond blossoms...
Come on sunshine, do your best!

  12. Well the photos look great despite the weird weather patterns! Here it is boiling hot but that is as per usual so weather in Africa is pretty stable (not like the politics LOL)

  13. To me, these photos are gorgeous! We will not see anything like this for a few more months. I am so ready for spring, our winter has been a total flop.

  14. What a pity! We've had a very mild winter this year and I've noticed wildflowers already blooming - usually don't get those until after the first of March.

I loved seeing the photos of those beautiful trees from last year though!

  15. hello Alison :) I know the weather is very odd isn't it? We have had very little snow this year and it will not be good for our farmers. I hope the blossoms come soon!

  16. Oh my! What a difference?! Does it normally smell wonderful too? Its such crazy weather everywhere right now but I feel like I'm saying that more and more often these days!

  17. What a shame that y'all are missing out on those lovely blossoms! Our weather has been unusually warm (compared to last year) and not as much rain as we need (considering the drought conditions this past summer). Not sure yet what spring will hold for us.

  18. Love your scenery photos! We are having a very dry hot summer here in SA, it was quite unbearable this past week! Thanks so much for dropping by my blog, I so appreciate it when you do :)

  19. Yup - the weather is confusing the plants for sure! Hopefully it will settle down soon, but part of me worries that this is just the beginning!

  22. Alison, that is so sad about the blossoms. I remember seeing similar beauty with blossoming trees when we were in Greece, just groves and groves everywhere. The smell was amazing. I really hope the trees in your area are just late and they still "full bloom"! Hugs, Jessica

  23. Wow, there's a really big difference between 2011 and 2012! I too hope that you will still get your early spring flowers--everyone deserves a reward like that as winter comes to a close.
