Storytelling Sundays - Santa's Helpers

My dad has always enjoyed playing 'Santa Claus'. As long as I can remember, he was 'Santa' for Sunday School parties, Playgroup parties...you name it, when any of our Church organisations needed a Santa dad was their first choice.

It was also customary for him to 'disappear'  for a while after Christmas Dinner...and for Santa to arrive with some forgotten gifts for everyone who was in attendance.

In 1992, when Stuart was seven he 'twigged' that the Sunday School party Santa sounded just like his Grandad. Nothing any of us could say could convince him otherwise, and he was really convinced that  there was no Santa!

We had to explain that  Santa is very busy over the Christmas period, trying to sort out the presents etc. and really didn't have time to personally get to all the parties that were going on during this time. He had, therefore, organised a group of 'helpers' who attended all the parties etc. on his behalf, which  Stuart was a bit suspicious about!

Fortunately, DH is always full of bright ideas when it comes to such things and a special letter (and Santa hat) appeared in Stuart's stocking  on Christmas morning, confirming the 'helper' theory and requesting that Stuart himself become a helper...but that, naturally, it was a secret he must keep from his little sister and cousins!

He was so excited all day, and couldn't wait for the moment when he went to help turn Grandad into one of Santa's helpers. He just couldn't believe that he was 'in' on Santa's big secret, and grinned from ear-to-ear as he helped hand out the presents!

Result?.....one happy boy who still believed!

This post has come to you as part of 'Sian's Storytelling Sunday' and if you go over to her   BLOG you will find more stories from a variety of wonderful storytellers.

Happy New Year to you all....I hope 2012 brings you peace and happiness......and lots of blogging!

Thanks for dropping by!
take care of you

  6. How I smiled when I read this story! We still do the whole 'Santa popping in on his way back to the North Pole with some extra presents' thing. The men in the family take it in turns to be Santa. One year my son asked if he could be Santa's elf - how I wish I could find a copy of the photo of him in green tights!
The Santa suit is back up in our loft now ready for next year.

  7. What a wonderful story. I can just imagine how excited Stuart must have been to be a helper, what a wonderful memory. We do the Santa coming back in the afternoon with some presents he has forgotten and my hubbie is Santa - the younger children in the family still think it is him, although Olivia (9) did ask why Santa was wearing Uncle Hugh's shoes!
