Glitter Girl to the Rescue

I have to confess that I haven't been doing much more than having a cursory glance at Shimelle's 'GLITTER GIRL' posts, and certainly haven't taken the time to watch the accompanying videos...last week however, she talked of scrapping photos from the 70s, 80s and 90s. Apart from being shocked..then depressed!....that she was treating them as 'vintage' photographs, I knew this was one video I should watch, as I've been trying to work out the best way to re-do my old photo albums.

These are the albums that house my pictures of my teenage years, college and early working years...not to mention both Stuart and Kirsty's early years. I didn't start scrapping 'properly' until 2003. By that time Kirsty was almost 14, and we had been without Stuart for almost ten years. Kirsty's photos all got scrapped 'properly' for her 18th and 21st Birthdays, but I knew that I wanted to do something with Stuart's pics,  Up until now I just haven't been able to bring myself to take the albums apart....which I was going to have to do (either that or scan everything, and then I never feel the photos are a sharp)) as all these photos were pre-digital.

However, as I watched Shimelle's video, I got some inspiration on how to treat these 'vintage' photos..and decided I was going to start  properly documenting Stuart's life at the weekend.

One of the problems I couldn't get my head round, was that I had done the good old cropping around the original (!) pictures with 'fancy' shaped scissors..and although Shimelle didn't cover this aspect, I decided that it was time to'just do it'.  I ended up (using the same scissors!) cutting the pictures off the original page, and came up with this

Shimelle had advised to use cream-based papers for these older photos, and for old Polaroids. The first shots taken in hospital, by the nursing staff, were Polaroids...so taking her advice,  this page

was transformed into

I'm happy with the way both LOs have turned out, but am happier still that I've actively (my OLW!) started to get Stuart's story told...thanks Shimelle!

Thanks for dropping by!
Take care of you
Alison xx

  9. Yay! I can't wait to watch along...Great job to start with and fortunately cutting around photos is now making a comeback would you believe! As for the vintage aspect....pfffft...she must be under 30 if she calls the 80s vintage...pffft....

  10. I have enjoyed watching the Glitter Girl videos. I hang out for them every week! I am so glad you have made a start. It is often the hardest part. I thought you tackled the cut photos beautifully and your second page is stunning! Most of us have photos we cut in some funky way or another. Thankfully I have the negatives for mine as I never went backwards, just forwards from when I started scrapbooking. I have been contemplating doing some of my childhood photos while I can still get my parents perspective on each photo. This video has given me the confidence to give to a go. Looking forward to seeing more of your "redone" layouts. :-)

  11. Oh Alison, I am so thrilled that you are scrapping these photos and your pages are absolutely lovely. I haven't really had time to watch those Glitter Girl videos either, but next time I sit down to scrap I think I'll pull one up for some inspiration!

  12. You have reminded me that I should not be so judgmental, I haven't looked atanything Glitter Girl related because I thought the name sounded really lame and prissy and was likely not going to be of relevance to me. I am obviously wrong!

It is wonderful to see your pages today, they were no doubt very difficult to make and it is inpsiring to see what you have done.

If you are into "vintage" scrapping (and I agree, eek!) do you want to pop over and have a play at AFSC? It's a lot of fun and some place to start. I'd love to see your page!

Great job on starting the project!

  21. Well done for making a brilliant start - I too had to laugh at the term "vintage" for that era ... perhaps "pre-digital" would have been kinder to us "mature" ladies!
Love your creativity in coping with the pre-cut photos and the page with the polaroids is lovely too.

  22. Alison, that little onsie clothes line is ADORABLE! Where did you get it? Did you make it? I've been thinking up this page for all of Maddie's first outfits and that would be perfect. LOVE your page. So sweet and gentle. Hugs, Jessica.

  23. I certainly understand what you mean about being depressed about things from our lifetimes being considered vintage. I was in an "antique" store recently and was surprised (and depressed too!) by how many things I recognized from various stages of my own life.

Best wishes with this latest scrapping endeavor. By the looks of the first two pages, you've made a great start. The clothesline with the onesies on it is just adorable!
